Dia:Beacon Museum, 2017-02-26, 11:00 am

Rain Date: N/A

Location: Beacon NY

Overview Description: Dia:Beacon Museum & Brunch

Full Description: Occupying a former Nabisco box printing factory on the banks of the Hudson River, Dia:Beacon Museum presents Dia’s collection of art from the 1960`s to the present as well as special exhibitions, new commissions, and public and education programs.

Built in 1929 by Nabisco, the nearly 300,000 square foot factory building is composed of brick, steel, concrete, and glass and is considered to be a model of early twentieth century industrial architecture. It stands as a symbol of Beacon’s past as a major industrial and manufacturing city. The original building had many key design elements that made it an appealing site for contemporary art, including broad spans between supporting columns and more than 34,000-square-feet of skylights. Today these skylights provide natural light in the galleries and have uniquely established Dia:Beacon as a “daylight museum.” Working closely with artist Robert Irwin, Dia devised a masterplan to create a twenty-first century museum building that retained the original character of the building. For the exterior setting, Irwin designed seasonally-changing gardens. Following the renovation, the building was listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places.

The museum doesn’t allow large bags/purses, so we will be required to check all backpacks, packages & open parcels, umbrellas, and bags/purses larger than 11 x 14 x 6 inches. Coatroom facilities are free of charge.

• Photographs may be taken in select Dia:Beacon galleries and attendants will let us know which one. But majority of them are photographable.
• No flash photography or video is ever permitted.
• No tripods or extension poles are ever permitted.

There is also a bookshop and a café in the museum, which we can also check out. The bookshop offers Dia publications; artists’ monographs; exhibition catalogues; publications on architecture, design, and writing; children’s books; regional titles; and periodicals.

The cost of the museum entrance is $15 General; $12 Students and seniors.

The town of Beacon also is a town with a nice main street and many restaurants.

We will start our trip at 11 am in The Roundhouse Restaurant (2 East Main Street, Beacon, NY) at Beacon Falls, where we will have brunch together. Roundhouse is a unique, historic property overlooking a beautiful waterfall and a rushing creek, where we might even the opportunity to take pictures of the creek and the waterfall too, after or before our meal.

After our meal, we will drive to the Dia Museum (3 Beekman Street, Beacon, New York), which is a few minutes away, in the other side of the town, by the Hudson River, and start our visit to the museum, which I am guessing will be around 12:45 pm latest.

We should allow ourselves about 1.5 hours to visit and photograph the museum, so we should be leaving the museum around 2:15 pm. After the museum, we can drive to the Main Street of Beacon, where there are nice shops and cafes and stroll through the town, and have coffee or dessert in one of the coffee shops.

I am estimating the trip to end around 3:30 pm.
