Walkway over Hudson and Lunch at CIA, 2024-05-18, 9 am

Rain Date: NA

Location: Poughkeepsie, NY

Overview Description: Walkway over Hudson, Roosevelt Home & Lunch at CIA

Full Description: NOTE THAT THIS FIELD TRIP SIGN UP LIST IS NOW LOCKED AT 18 AS OF MARCH 18TH DUE TO RESERVATIONS AND PAYMENTS THAT NEED TO TO BE MADE EARLY ON.
NO MORE SIGN UPS OR DROP OUTS PLEASE.
APOLOGIES FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.

This field trip will consist of 4 different activities.

We will first walk and photograph the view from the Walkway over Hudson. Then we will stop at Home of Franklin D Roosevelt National Historic Site to attend a guided visit of the home, as well as walk around the grounds. And follow it up with a lunch at one of the CIA restaurants and a tour of the CIA to interact with students and see behind the scenes of CIA right after lunch.

The Walkway Over Hudson spans the Hudson River and connects the City of Poughkeepsie in Dutchess County with the Town of Lloyd and hamlet of Highland in Ulster County, New York.
The Walkway is 1.28 miles from one gate to the other. It stands 212 feet above the Hudson River.

Our meeting place and time is at 9 am in the Poughkeepsie Gate of the Walkway. You can park in the Poughkeepsie Station Parking lot at P346+XG Poughkeepsie on GPS (10 min walking to the Walkway Gate). Or, if it is full for some reason, you can park at the parking at 61 Parker Avenue (17 min walking to the Walkway Gate). There should be non-permit spots, which you pay at the meter hourly, in either of those parking lots.

Then we will walk to the West side, and then back to our cars, as we are photographing the views from the Walkway and Hudson River. That should take us about 1 hour. Then at 10 am, we will start driving to Home of Franklin D Roosevelt National Historic Site, which is about 10-15 min driving from the Poughkeepsie Station Parking lot.

We will meet again at the parking lot of Home of Franklin D Roosevelt National Historic Site at 10:15 am. We will start our visit at the Henry Wallace Visitor Center with a 25-minute film and self-guided exhibits. Then, we will aim to attend a guided tour of the Home at 11 am. But individual tickets are on a first come first serve basis ($10), so we will see if we can get into the Home tour or not, when we are there. If we can, the Home tour will be for 40 min. If not, then we will go around the grounds and gardens to take pictures (no charge for the Grounds). There is also the Presidential Library, which we can get in for $10 ($6 for seniors).

We need to be at Culinary Institute of America (CIA) by 12:30 pm. So, we should leave Roosevelt National Historic Site by 12:20 pm. This leaves us with about 30 min. to tour the grounds and photograph the gardens at the Site before we meet at the parking lot at 12:20 pm to start driving to CIA.

Our restaurant booking is at American Bounty Restaurant. Because they couldn’t accommodate a large party all on one table, I had to make several table reservations under different names. And some of the reservations are for 12:30 pm and some are for 12:45 pm, based on what was available. I am hoping that the seating times will be close to each other, so we can all start and finish eating at similar times.

After lunch, we will go behind-the-scenes of the CIA and get an inside look into the world of food (The CIA Experience). We will meet at the information desk at 2:15 pm for our 2:30 pm tour. We will participate in an interactive demonstration where we’ll explore the science of taste. We will tour their Roth Hall, the building where culinary magic happens, and be transported to exceptional moments in food history. We will find the opportunity to connect with CIA students in an exclusive Q&A session. We will learn about the mystique of the world-famous CIA. This will take approximately one hour in length. The cost of this experience is $15 per person, and I have already paid for it for all of us (Confirmation #: 2109744752). So, you don’t need to do anything on your end for now.

The field trip is expected to end around 3:30 pm.
