Field Trip Information

Paterson Youth Photography Project and Paterson Great Falls, 2017-11-04, 9:45 am

Rain Date: NA

Location: Paterson, NJ

Overview Description: Paterson Youth Photography Project and Paterson Great Falls

Full Description: The trip will start with an act of volunteering to enrich the lives of school age children by teaching them photography as a means for self-expression and an opportunity for personal growth at Oasis, Haven for Women & Children, in Paterson, NJ.

Two of our members, Jacek Kowalski and Ruth Plucinski, have been regularly volunteering at this facility and they have helped us with the arrangements with the management of Oasis for this trip. However, note that due to the limited capacity of the facility and to provide the kids with the best learning environment, we are having to limit the attendance to this part of the field trip to a maximum of 8 people. Therefore, before you sign up, please have a look to see how many people have already signed up before you and do not sign up if there are already 8 people on the list.

The class will start at 10:00 am at 59 Mill St. Paterson 07501, so we should plan to meet at the facility at about 9:45 am. The classroom is upstairs on the 2nd floor. So, you can sign in at front door as PYPP participants and come upstairs to the second floor. Since the parking around Oasis is challenging, it is recommended that you carpool as much as possible. You can first try the parking lot of Oasis, or the street parking that might be available at that time around the facility, and if you are still having difficulty, you can also try the parking lot of Paterson Museum which is 2 blocks away. The museum lot entrance is from Market St., just before the corner of Spruce St.

First, Ruth will be presenting a short lesson on nature photography to the kids at the start, and then we will all walk to the Paterson Falls which should take about 15 minutes to get there. Note that the Overlook Park is closed at this time due to landscape improvement, but the footbridge across the Great Falls chasm, Mary Ellen Kramer Park and Upper Raceway Park remains open.

We will be with the kids at the Falls until about 11:45 am. About a dozen kids are expected to attend, and during this time, we are expected to partner one-on-one with them for guidance (helping find worthy subjects & perspectives to shoot the scenery, watching that they hold the camera steady, reviewing their shots on LCD and offering suggestions for improvement, etc.). Then, Ruth and Jacek would walk the kids back to Oasis, while the rest can stay at the Falls and continue to take more pictures.

(Note that if the weather doesn’t allow for outside photography that day, we will head for the Oasis soup-kitchen and do table-top still-life photography! If this happens to be the case, I will email you in advance so that you can bring some objects to shoot with us.)

At 12:30 pm, we will all start walking back to Oasis and meet Ruth and Jacek there to go to lunch all together, as the kids go home. We will be going to a Turkish Restaurant 10 min away from Oasis, called Toros on Hazel Street (1083 Main Street, Paterson NJ). Our booking at Toros is for 1 pm.

I expect our trip to end around 2:30 pm.
